Felt like I was losing my writing mojo, so wrote about a very good Sunday in LA, must write more just for its own sake. Then again, so should everyone. Contains the word ‘bollocks’, if you’re faint of heart.

A year ago I was asked to write about the end of Rush, which was the best and worst job ever. Instead, I wrote about going to Toronto to talk to them about Vapor Trails, and coming back to life as a band and people, to that final show in LA and the long goodbye. It was quite the arc and I was lucky to live it. We lost Neil, we lost Peg, but I’m so happy I still get to be friends with the other two still. I don’t care what you think about this collection (or my brilliant essay! - for the record, the box set hangs together really well, what a musical journey they had, unparalleled really, and the essay's not bad). But there was a moment where we talked about the Cleveland club show, two tracks featured here, both Al and Ged, separately, and they talked about Neil being the new kid, and being headliners and being that band and being young and vital and being alive. And I don’t care where you are in life, those moments are rare and golden, we all have those memories, but with less Neil, sadly. Also, read my essay, it’s art, sort of. Make art. Also, listen to Neil hit that snare. Ridiculous.

Still here… one year later. Still not over P (that was unexpected, like the pain from a drunk driver on a blind corner breaking your hip is unexpected). Still in love with Ravioli (the cat, though the pasta has a lot to recommend it too). Still not over how quickly people can turn you over professionally (and how they’re still going to fucking get theirs). Still excited by the new opportunities that shithousery has afforded me though. Still buying black T-shirts with band logos on (because you’re always 15 somewhere). Still watching novel 3 float around in the ether (art is hard, but so is commerce). Still writing, though I’m not sure why or what. Still grateful, sometimes. Still the king of bad dating (I’ve turned bad dating into something of a sensei master trick, it’s a whole other level). Still got morning hair that goes all day. Still can’t sleep (I started writing this at 5.30 this morning). Still can’t believe the state of Welsh rugby. Still love some things that aren’t Ravi: hard rock, jazz, I mean music, don’t I? New books, old books, Moleskine notebooks, my fountain pen, coffee, wine (probably too much of the last two), rain, late night trains, the sky, running, Bill Evans at the piano, the way Franz Marc paints animals, the way the South Bank looks at sunset, pizza, a good burrito, my poor, long suffering friends. Still can’t believe you’re reading this. Still, Happy Birthday me…

Five years gone, that feels insane to me. Miss you, Neil, the light shone out of you. On a happier note, here’s one last memory of that glorious final show, me and @richsibbald taking a golf cart - don’t ask - to traverse the enormous car park and get a shot of the last sold out show signage. Later, you beating the merry hell out your kit for hours like it had insulted your mother. We will literally never see your like again. Ride hard, fella. Rest well. #rushband #neilpeart

Strange how your vices change as you get older. Getting these two packages delivered now is as exciting as when I was a much younger man and much more, ah, colourful stuff would come to my door. Change is good though, some might even say it's progress. And at least the walls don't start melting when I use either of these. #write #run

I could talk about friendship and love, it’s that time of year, but mainly about watching the Yankees with my dear chum, Glee, as the Yankees kicked the Blue Jays up the ass (don’t mention the World Series, I know, fucking awful), but as we left the stadium, and everyone wanted to touch my Canadian chum (he always smells great, it’s understandable) they let us walk onto the pitch and then out through the bullpen with the Yankees! I must admit at that point - and I love Rush and Glee - I was high fiving Yankees players like we were old friends. I’m a disgrace. But what a moment. And what a book. Not sure any of you like baseball, but it’s like finding god when you get it. Though he still eludes me. It’s a wonderful thing. As is this book. Merry Christmas, G, love you. Did my first DJ set in years courtesy of the wonderful @yacht_heart and @alexandermilas last night, got hugged for playing Jellyfish and bought a drink for playing the Doobie Brothers twice. And got a garland, which sets off my cold, dead eyes. I was very, very drunk at this point. Merry Christmas.

Said goodbye to P today, my beautiful girl. She was so ill, and so suddenly that my stupid fucking brain thought it was a glitch, thought it would pass, thought we could beat it. But I’m an idiot, but even this idiot knew this morning was night. I love her, like I love Dylan (they were brother and sister in a way), both in the past but forever with me. I love you P, I hope I made you happy. It’s fucking empty here without you.

I’m off to buy some Welsh cakes (we call them cakes), don’t tell my mother, she gets furious when they’re not the ones she makes. Wales, I love you.

It’s hard to quantify how much running means to me, and something I don’t think too much about until I can’t do it. Which has been the case for over three months after I tore my meniscus, which is about as much fun as it sounds. But been back at it this week, slow and steady, and I can already feel the shadows fade, less sadness, more endeavour. Running rocks, and so I bought these new tops from the good people @overmuchapparel to celebrate. As my dear friend and co-founder at the Heavy Metal Running Club @scottb71 always says; run happy. It may be that I’m a Valley Boy and from a family of miners, but this story of the rise of the NHS and the force of nature that was Nye Bevan made my head spin, I was in tears by the end. @michael_sheen_official is clearly our new patron saint, along with the @manics (I once went on a film shoot with both Sheen and MSP in Swansea, that was almost too Welsh, almost), anyway, you don’t have to be a Taff to be moved by this. You just have to care about people and what happens when they and we need help. Thanks @nationaltheatre for the invite. I’ve played it forward by buying my mam tix for when it reaches the @thecentre_yganolfan nium in Cardiff in May. Do go if you can.

I go and sit in the garden every night and I talk to Dylan and I cry my eyes out. And I want to fight someone, and I want to break things, and sometimes I do, but usually I kneel down and I grab handfuls of the earth I buried him in and I rub it into my hands and face and try to find him in those places, in a song, his mew, and I gasp for air as my lungs are filled with grief. And I really, really want to die. I don’t believe in anything, but if I could lie down there with my boy then I would welcome the scatter of earth falling on my chest and face. His heavy head on mine, his disgruntled purr rattling through my skull one last time.

We spent a lot of time on the recent @geddyimages book tour (read his memoir, it made my contact lens pop out), talking about Neil with Ged and @thereallerxst and @megaphonepics, off stage and on. There was a moment that was strangely intimate on the Barbican stage when we talked about the email Neil sent detailing his illness to Ged and Al, and then another in, it might have been Sheffield, apologies if not, when he came up again and Ged and I teetered on the edge of tears and I reached out to touch Ged’s arm and completely forgot there were around 1200 people staring at this moment of sadness and remembrance, not a little devotion too. I think what I’m saying is that Neil’s hard to forget, and who’d want that anyway? What a presence; humility, warmth, quite the fucking drummer too. As I’ve said before, I only knew him a little while, but it was good to be near his light for a time and to remember him publicly and otherwise with some of my other favourite Canadians. The pic is the last soundcheck at the LA Forum, seems so long ago now, standing there in the half light watching them running through Losing It, of all things. Go well, Neil. Ride on, you’re much missed.
